The narrative of
the video shows Eminem talking to a group of people as if he were in a meeting
with others explaining their problems so they can get help and supports. The
story weaves between this scene and scenes where he is with his daughter and
when he is on stage. The video starts
with a man in front of an audience speaking into a microphone indicating that
the video is set in a room where people gather to speak about their emotions
and feelings. The man at the start is talking sincerely about issues to him
setting the mood as an emotion filled song.
1. The first wide shot shows Eminem taking to a group of people discussing their problems. Everyone in the room is wearing normal casual clothing inside what looks like a school gym or a hall. The room has low-key lighting making the scene seem more serious. Eminem is in plain clothes giving the impression that the artist is not performing showing him as normal. Eminem is trying to get the audience to relate to him so they can connect to the song.
2. The video and song are based around his real life experiences but slightly over exaggerated about how he has hurt his family due to his singing career. Goodwin’s theory is used in this shot. The lyrics and the video are amplified when he says “Have you ever loved someone so much, you’d give an arm for. Not the expression, no, literally give an arm for?” He is trying to show the audience that he doesn’t mean to hurt his daughter due to his commitments and shows that he literally gave an arm for her by getting her face tattooed on his arm.
3. This shot shows Eminem with a pad of paper and pen. This indicates he is writing lyrics as Eminem is known for writing his own lyrics. The background shows what seems to be Eminem’s home showing that his work with music goes further than just the studio meaning his family life is hurt. The relationship between the images and lyrics are illustrative as when he says, “Daddy’s writing a song, this song ain’t gon write itself.” the words slowly appear on the page literally writing itself. This shows how he just doesn’t have enough time when home to spend time with his family due to his responsibilities as a rapper and lyricist. The lighting again is quite dark keeping with the serious and emotional lyrics.
4. I feel this medium shot show shows that Eminem has to explain himself to his family and fans that he doesn’t want to be seen as a bad guy and that he does care for them even though in the public eye it might not look like he does. The audience is seen carefully listening to Eminem as he speaks indicating that his words are connecting with the audience and that they can relate to him. The lighting is dark still keeping with the theme of the video. This show also shows his clothes and that he isn’t wearing anything flashy or expensive just a white top, a coat and a hat.
5. This medium shot shows Eminem standing in front of a crowd performing. The relationship between the lyrics and the images are illustrative with him performing the song he is singing. During these lyrics he explains his true feelings about performing and how he had put his fans ahead of other priorities in his life such as his daughter. When he says “they’re throwing roses at my feet” This is illustrated as the crowd start literarily throwing roses on stage. He is wearing a suit and tie indicating that he takes his music seriously and is respected for his performing by his fans.
6. During this shot the lyrics are amplified when Eminem says “You lied to me dad, and now you made mommy sad, and I bought you this coin, it says 'Number One Dad.' "That's all I wanted, I just want to give you this coin, I get the point, fine, me and mommy are goin.'" But baby wait, "It's too late dad, you made your choice, now go out there and show 'em that you love 'em more than us" This shows that Eminem is scared that his daughter will think he will choose his fans over her and is trying to tell the fans that he doesn’t want this to happen.
7. Goodwins notion of looking is used when Eminem is looking into the mirror as the person he wants to be but sees the person he doesn’t want to be. This indicates that his real personality and his stars personality are different. During this last shot Eminem realizes its not too late to change everything. He says “I turn around, find a gun on the ground, cock it, put it to my brain and scream "die Shady" and pop it.” He basically says how he wants to kill his persona as a rapper so he can spend more time with his family.
8. This wide shot shows Eminem cuddling his
girlfriend with his daughter and another girl he looks after. This shot is a
lot brighter than the other shots in the video giving the shot a nice aura and
a happy glow. This is showing Eminem in the normal happy family he is wishing
for. The normality is shown through the clothing of the people in the shot and
the fact the shot is just him and his family with no audience or fans.
9. The final wide show moves through the audience showing that they’re serious but happy faces showing they can relate to some of their personal experiences. I feel the audience in the video is meant to represent his fans and hopes they accept that he needs to reduce time spent rapping so he can sort his life out.
In conclusion the music video and lyrics represents Eminem as a unique rapper, talking more about family and life rather than talking about getting women and telling everyone about how much money he is making and the music video doesn’t include seductive women or Eminem in expensive clothes. This is counter typical to the rap genre.
