DIGIPAK ANALYSIS: 'UNTIL NOW' BY SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA

This Digipack is for Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Until Now’ Album which was the last album released as a trio before the three artists (Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello) split up to pursue their individual careers. The album is listed on Amazon for £11.99 and contains 22 tracks and one mix of all of the 22 songs on the album mixed together by the three artists. The genre for this album is House, Electro house and Progressive house and these genres were commercialised by the trio (Played on radio).

The front cover design of the album is very simple. It has three medium shots of each individual artist and then each of the photographs have been edited and filtered. They did this by each of the photos having a negative effect on them which turns all the white areas on photograph black and black areas into white and filtered the photograph so it only contains two colours which are white and black. These two colours heavily contrast and stand out when put together. They have used a Serif font for the text ‘Swedish House Mafia Until Now’ which give a formal look for the front cover of the album almost to make it look like a newspaper telegraphed text but also makes it look clean, simple and neat and it is also positioned at the top of the album in the middle like a newspaper title would be placed. The font used is a font like Times New Roman and each of the titles is coloured differently, ‘Swedish House Mafia’ is coloured white due to the inverted colours on the album and there is a black background behind that text. The text ‘Until Now’ is coloured black but also has small white spots due to the inversion to the background behind the text
The back of the Digipack contains the song list and the songs are written in a different styled text to the artist’s name. The artists are written in a Serif font whereas the each rather than the song title is written in a Sans Serif font. Although this is a small and very minimal change the overall look on the back of the cover is a simple and minimalistic cover which is just doing the job it is entitled to and that is to show you the artists which produced each song and the songs name. The background of the back cover is just pure white and the text is in black so the text stands out very clear when put in the centre of the white background.
The overall look that the artists were trying to achieve is a simple yet effective album cover with simple effects like inverting colours on pictures and simple Serif font text. I think they have achieved continuity through the Digipack by sticking to only two simples colours and these colours are black and white. These colours give the three artists on the front give the person who is viewing the album cover some sort of embracing power inside of them, Gives the image of the three artists that they have enough power in their music to get large crowds in stadiums jumping and moving to their music. This also relates to Goodwins theory of how showing closeups of an artists face will promote their image because only the artists faces are highlights and the images have been cut off below the neck so they only wanted the empowering images of their faces with no expression on them. The three artists are wearing casual clothes in this image as they have not dressed up for this occasion and this says about them that they are casual people who are not too fussed about keeping up with latest fashion and caring about their appearance 24/7 all they care about is making good music to empower large crowds and make people feel emotion from their music.
By researching this Digipack it has given our group lots of ideas of how we want our Digipack to look and we also took key points from this Digipack that we must carry over to ours and one crucial point would be to have continuity through the Digipack whether it be using the same colours all the way through or by using the same image or a panoramic image that stretches over 2 panels, and we also do not need to break too many barriers in terms of editing as it is shown in this album cover that simples techniques like reversing pictures can still look amazing.
